Go Green With Biopori Hole : 5W and 1H
Rapid development house, road and high rise building in urban area will soon covered all ground surface. This situation makes the rainwater can not seep or absorb into the ground and the result could trigger flooding and water quality degradation. Do you want this fact continues? If not, you can take simple action to reduce it by making a biopori hole in your house.
What is biopori hole?
Naturally, biopori are small holes in the ground created by soil organisms like worms or roots of trees in the soil. These holes will be filled with air and into the path of flow of water. So these holes can absorb rain water and reduce water run-off. To increase capacity of rain water absorptions people make a artificial biopori . Thanks to Mr Kamir R Brata, an Indonesian scientist at Bogor Institute of Agriculture as a creator of artificial biopori hole.

Where is a right location of Biopori Hole?
Biopori can be made in the front yard, back yard or garden of your house. The holes should be made on a place that is free from traffic passing by people especially children. Therefore, its placement must be adjusted with the existing landscape where the water will naturally tend to congregate or water is directed into the place where the biopori hole are made. Rainwater drainage channel, around the trees, or the park boundary is the right place of biopori hole which fulfill of criteria above.
Who should make
All people love their environment , I think You’re included.
When do we make?
Usually people make or maintenance biopori hole on dry season or early rainy season. At this time top soil is dry and easy to make a hole, so when rainy season come this hole will work and absorb rain water.
Why we should have a biopori hole?
Biopori hole could reduce the risk of flooding due to overflowing rain water, reserve underground water, reduce the city’s trash and can be useful to make compost or fertilizer plants. The holes and given organic waste would trigger soil biota such as worms and ants and roots of plants to create cavities (holes) in the soil called Biopori. Cavities (Biopori) is a channel for water to seep into the soil . One biopori hole can put up 8 liters of organic trash and it takes about 30 days decomposition process. When the trash has become compost then the hole must be refilled.
How to make a biopori ?
Below is a way of making biopori hole:
Biopori Drill and Variety of Hole Design
- Create 8-10 hole in your garden or yard with diameter 10 cm and depth about 70-100 cm. Make space between holes around 50-100 cm. You need a special stick called Biopori Drill to dig the hole.
- Reinforced a hole with pipe or cement
- Fill the hole with organic waste from kitchen garbage, the remaining plants, or leaves
- Add an organic garbage when the hole has been reduced due to weathering processes
- Compost is formed in the hole and can be taken at each end of the dry season along with the maintenance hole.
